Calling All Aspiring Comedy Writers

Submissions are now open for our 2022 HAWAII COMEDY FESTIVAL START-UP TEAM!
The 8th Annual Hawaii Comedy Festival will be held from Thursday, October 14th – Saturday, October 15th, 2022 at Studio 909 in the Musicians Association of Hawaii.

What is the Hawaii Comedy Fest Start-Up Team?

The Hawaii Comedy Fest Start-Up Team is a group 4-6 of Oahu-based aspiring comedy writers who will meet once a week with a mentor and producer starting the week of September 12th. The goal is to create original sketch comedy scripts (both live and filmed) to present at The Hawaii Comedy Festival.

Commitments:

  • Start-Up Team Writers must attend all meetings with their mentor, producer and fellow team members.
  • Writers do not have to be in the same location and are welcome to work from home.

Deadlines:

  • Start-Up Writers must submit by Wednesday, September 7th, 2022, at 11:59pm Hawaii Time*
  • *Open to Oahu-based writers only

Application Fee:

There is a $50 submission fee* for all Start Up Team applications.
*100% OF THE FEE WILL BE REFUNDED TO SUBMISSIONS THAT ARE NOT ACCEPTED. Refunds may take up to 2-7 business days.

Application Fee Includes:

  • 5 Virtual work sessions with a writing mentor.
  • 2 tickets to your show($50 value).

Why is there an Application Fee?

The $50 application fee ensures participants are engaged and committed while also helping to offset production costs. Participants will receive 2 tickets to their show – a $50 value. All submissions that are not selected will be refunded.

The Hawaii Comedy Festival will provide:

  • A qualified writing mentor.
  • A dedicated show producer to run your show.
  • Proper rehearsal and performance spaces.
  • A budget for props and costumes.

About Your Writing Mentor:

Chris Renfro (They/Them) is an LA-based writer and performer who can currently be seen on Peacock’s Queer as Folk and The CW’s Tom Swift. They’ve written and performed at the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre, Second City, and are an alumnus of the CBS Diversity Showcase. Their sketch collaborations with CollegeHumor, DROPOUT, and others have amassed 1+ million views and they currently produce/co-host the hit sold-out variety show, Gaysian AF!
